Today we're happy to announce that we're adding another exciting name to our Scandinavian watch design hall of fame. Bulbul is a new Danish watch brand, which we immediately wanted to know more about. At first we were flummoxed as the website About page kept it very simple. In fact, all we read was "We want to design and create great watches, that's all." Well, that's what really matters, we thought. Perhaps that's all we need to know?
Well, as it happens in addition to collating the best designer watch brands out there, we're also watch brand detectives and we find out a little bit more about Bulbul.
First we got to the bottom of the name. Bulbul is the name of a family of birds; a family of birds which boasts mohawk style crests on top of their heads. In other words, the bulbul is a cool bird - nay, a hipster bird. Bulbuls are songbirds too which mean they can croon a nice little tune without much effort. Throw in the fact that they're monogamous, hard-working, high-flying and worldly wise too and it's hard not to have great respect for the bulbul bird. Likewise, it's hard not to like the four-piece Pebble range of watches launched by Bulbul, the watch brand not the family of birds, of course.
Secondly we found out why the design is so strong. It's because standing proudly behind the design are the "three Danish design musketeers" aka Danish design group, KiBiSi. With their work being featured in museum collections in the MOMA in New York and Centre National d'Arts Plastiques in Paris, you know that Lars, Jens and Bjarke have the artistic and design credentials to bring something special to a brand new watch. Even at first sight Bulbul's Pebble Watch does look very different and yet, very wearable.
Last but not least we know that Bulbul has launched itself onto the market with a delightful debut design. All four Pebble Watches are simple insofar as the watch face is kept clean and simple with no numbers or added detail. The character comes from a slightly asymmetrical design and from having a shot of bright blue in the wrist strap loop which carries the brand name. All the watches' straps are made from soft Italian leather.
